Groundwork about to begin for Special Care Nursery renos

After years of planning and fundraising through our Together We Care campaign, the $6.1 million, “re-imaging” of our Special Care Nursery (SCN) is about to begin. Completely funded by community donations, its redevelopment and expansion will support the philosophy of integrated and family-centred care. It is an opportunity to enhance patient safety, improve the patient and family experience, and ensure best practices are at the forefront of care for infants and families requiring specialized care.

Starting this week, the first step is the the emptying and relocation of office spaces and call rooms in the SCN hallway. For this to happen, other areas of the hospital need to be prepared to accommodate the moves.

Each year, 1,700 babies are born here – and as our community grows, so does our number of new births. Over 350 new babies need to spend time in our Special Care Nursery to ensure the best start possible.

The updated and expanded SCN will result in:

  • Six, one-bed patient rooms, one twin patient room and one isolation room totaling 5,600 sq ft, all private with walls rather than curtains as we have now
  • Parents being able to sleep in the new rooms with their new arrival
  • Improved capacity for growth or high demand periods, more family bonding time in their earliest days together, and better outcomes for babies when families are together and included in their care.
  • Allowing more sick babies to remain here without having to be transferred to a larger hospital, keeping them near their family and community.
  • New equipment with technological advances leading to improved assessment and monitoring of birth and recovery, reducing risks for mom and baby
  • A separate resuscitation room

Our Foundation needs your help!

We’re planning an ad campaign to announce some very exciting news about our $34 million Together, We Care fundraising campaign…and we hope you will help. The ad concept is a montage of 100 photo images of patients, GGH team members and donors, each holding up one of our pre-made celebration signs.

We’ll be using the images in traditional media and social media as we share news about our campaign and the difference it has made and will continue to make to the care we provide at GGH.

So, over the next few days, you might see Montana from our Foundation team around with her camera, looking for folks who would be willing to be in one of these photos. We hope you’ll help us out!

More Staff Wellness Massage Days

Based on your Health & Wellness Survey feedback, and as way to thank you for your continued amazing work, Onsite Health Massage will be providing three more days of massages in March (1, 8, 15). All sessions will be offered from 12-5 p.m. in the FBU Conference Room (6048) as a way to try and reach as many people, and shifts, as possible.  If you have already scored a spot and are now unable to attend, please cancel it to free up the space for someone else (click here to change your booking) as we had a number of “no-shows” in February.  We want as many people as possible to enjoy this treat brought to you by our amazing Foundation donors.

Movie’s discussion group tomorrow

Earlier this month staff were asked for movie suggestions as a part of Black History Month @ GGH. The 15-minute National Film Board movie, “Ice Breakers” was selected.
“Josh Crooks is a promising teen hockey star in a sport where Black players like him are chronically underrepresented. Ice Breakers reveals the buried history of a pioneering Black hockey league in Atlantic Canada, as Crooks discovers that his unshakable passion is tied to a rich and remarkable heritage.”

On February 24 from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. there will be a Movie and Discussion Group. You can register on our LMS or email inclusion@gghorg.ca. For those unable to participate, a link to the movie can be found here.

March is National Nutrition Month

Keep an eye out for information throughout the hospital next week on how you can participate.  If you want to get a jump-start, remember that Homewood Health provides Life Smart Nutritional Coaching – give them a call at 1-800-663-1142 to get set up with a Registered Dietitian – all for free!
