Second MRI machine approved for Guelph General Hospital

As part of the provinces commitment to expand access to diagnostic screening

GUELPH, Ontario – December 20, 2022 – Guelph General Hospital’s application for funding to operate a second magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine has been approved, as part of the government’s commitment to expand access to diagnostic services announced earlier this month.

“We use an MRI to help diagnose various health problems including cancer. It is a non-invasive exam that captures images of organs and tissues in the body. We have seen an increased demand for this service over the past few years – an additional machine will certainly help us in keeping pace with that demand,” shared Dr. Samir Patel, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at Guelph General Hospital.

This is one of 27 new MRI machines that the Ontario government has committed to provide annual operating funding for across the province.

Currently the hospital uses one machine to support 12,000 patients each year in the local community and from other local hospitals without an MRI. This 16-year-old machine will be replaced in the summer of 2023 with newer technology thanks to over $2.25M in donations from the community (all patient-care equipment at the hospital comes from donations).

With operational funding now in place, The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital will now work to raise the funds required to purchase the additional machine. A second MRI machine will allow Guelph General Hospital to support more patients; keeping care close to home as well as reducing wait times.

“We are grateful to be able to offer the benefits that a second MRI machine will bring to the Guelph and Wellington County community. We are so appreciative of our dedicated diagnostic imaging professionals that will continue to support this important work,” shared Marianne Walker, President & CEO, Guelph General Hospital.

The Diagnostic Imaging department at Guelph General Hospital supports inpatient and outpatient clinical programs at the hospital. It currently provides Bone Densitometry, Computed Tomography (CT), Mammography, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, General Ultrasound, and X-ray.
